Robert Dickerson

Robert Dickerson’s work is immediately recognisable.  The blank planes of the faces he paints offer themselves for interpretation, like theatre masks.   Dickerson would say he was often surprised by what people read into his paintings.
“People project themselves into them. You can interpret a painting how you want.” The figures are often set in open spaces – lovers are lost in their own world, solitary figures brood, small groups interact.
Robert Dickerson AO was certainly one of Australia’s greatest figurative artists, and his reputation has continued to grow ever since he came to prominence in the early 1950s.
